Workplace Violence: Creating a Culture of Safety in Your Organization

Every year, millions of American workers report having been victims of workplace violence. In 2017, assaults resulted in 18,400 injuries and 458 fatalities, according to Injury Facts®.

Workplace violence is a threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or disruptive behavior that happens in a workplace environment. From threats to physical assaults and shootings, acts of violence are the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. It can affect employees, clients, customers and visitors.

Workplace violence can happen anywhere at any time. What matters is how effectively, accurately, and appropriately you choose to respond to the incident.

THE PROBLEM - RISE IN WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, workplace violence categorizes into four different segments:

  • Criminal intent
  • Customer/client relationships
  • Worker-on-worker relationships
  • Personal relationships

Did you know that one out of seven Americans doesn't feel safe at work? This is because workplace violence has increased in the past several decades; 27 percent of shootings have explicitly occurred at workplaces since 1966.

The deadliest situations of workplace violence do involve an active shooter. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as someone "actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area." After all, 70 percent of all active shooter incidents are within commerce, business, or educational settings.

Research shows stress and fear significantly reduces when organizations provide workplace violence training for employees. Employees gain the opportunity to incorporate proper threat response, violence prevention, and tips for creating a safer all-around environment when danger strikes.

Your company can take action into their own hands and equip their employees with tools, knowledge, and skills for preparation to survive the next life-threatening event.

YOU CAN BE THE SOLUTION

Gain insight on how to prepare for workplace violence. You have a chance to make a positive impact on creating a safer work environment.

Prepare and gain knowledge for the following:

Run, Hide, Fight

The Houston PD developed a safety model for the general public to utilize to encompass a safer culture whenever and wherever. You have three options when faced with a life-threatening situation:

  • Run - The best choice for your safety. Develop a plan to evacuate and escape. Help others escape, if possible.
  • Hide - If you are unable to make an escape plan and get out safely, find a hiding place. Act quickly and ideally, find a safe room then hide behind large objects.
  • Fight - This option should be a last resort, but if confronted with the active shooter fight for your protection. Act with aggression and commit to your actions. Improvise with weapons for defense.

When authorities arrive, follow their instructions and remain as calm as possible.

AN IDEAL CULTURE OF SAFETY

Every organization needs to recognize the reality of workplace violence and take action to maintain a safe and healthy environment for its employees. One option to cater to this pertinent need is through employee training.

Let us ask you a question - what are you doing to keep your employees safe?
