Sep 18, 2019 10:43:44 AM / by Active Threat Solutions by Defense in Depth

You feel your heartbeat rapidly firing off like the gunshots you just heard down the hall. Your muscles are tense, and your brain isn't thinking clearly… what's your next step?

Your life is in the palm of your hands. How you respond can be the difference between making it home that evening or not. Do you know what to do when faced with a life-threatening situation? We want you to have the knowledge and confidence to respond with fierce defensiveness to save your life and the lives of others.

Don't back down in a threatening situation. Continue reading to learn how to respond to a threat appropriately and how Active Threat Solutions can help you.

ACTIVE THREAT RESPONSE | WHAT YOU CAN DO

Five steps you can do to respond appropriately during an active threat situation:

  1. Remain calm. When in a high-stress case, your mind cannot think clearly, and the body reacts before your brain. Try your best to remain calm and continue taking the right steps to stay safe. Additionally, if you are around others, you could influence them to act calmly in a stressful, life-threatening situation.
  2. Quickly locate escape routes and run, if possible. Ideally, when you first enter a building, you should be aware of your environment and potentially escape routines in case. Encourage others to leave with you, if possible.
  3. Hide. If you cannot escape, find a safe hiding place and do not restrict your options for movement. Choose to hide behind large, protective objects and stay out of the shooter’s view.
  4. Fight. As a last resort, fight if you need to save your life when faced with the assailant. Act with aggression and commit to your actions. Improvise with weapons and use them to protect yourself and others around you.
  5. Call 911. When talking to the police, identify the number of attackers, if there is more than one, identify the location of the attacker/s, if possible, give a description of the attacker/s, including gender, clothing, weight, height, hair or any other identifiable factors, identify any weapons that are being used, identify the number of victims there are.

To prepare for a potential future active threat attack, develop an emergency action plan (EAP) and participate in an active shooter training course or an emergency response seminar.

ACTIVE THREAT RESPONSE | WHAT ACTIVE THREAT SOLUTIONS CAN DO FOR YOU

Active Threat Solutions provides many services for your organization or business to know what to do in the case of an active threat situation. With a proper threat response, our services include emergency response and response training for security professionals, law enforcement and first responders.

Emergency response is post active threat training. This training includes CPR and AED certifications through the American Heart Association. Our emergency response training is a 10-minute medic class presented by Alex Shay, a former US Army combat medic. Shay covers "The 10-Minute Medic," a method that can save lives during an active threat situation. The course focuses on the ability to control bleeding until a higher degree of assistance arrives and what you need to do when someone is severely injured

Another aspect of emergency response includes administrative response and business continuity:

  • How to handle law enforcement and the media.
  • How to get your business or establishment revitalized.
  • Relocating, providing resources to your employees for counseling services.
  • And more.

We also provide active threat response in-service training for:

proper threat response

Both courses are a one to two-day training class. Rick Tessari teaches classroom instruction and entries and live-fire exercises.

ATS teaches an active threat response for first responders (Fire and EMS Professionals) as well. This is an eight-hour course that provides the best practices for safety and security  when responding to an incident.
